ButanGas, a story of success

“The story of ButanGas has become in few time a tale made of daring and generous fights in which we have been thrown in a passionate ride with the purpose to reach soon and all together our target”.

(From a speech of Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Costantino Dragan at the first National Congress of ButanGas on April 20, 1952)

Since 1948 ButanGas company which has been setting up from a brave intuition of its Founder, Dr. Giuseppe Costantino Dragan, is today one of the leading companies in the Lpgas Italian market. After the Second World War, when Italy was just coming out from the destruction, Dr. Dragan believed that it was the time to explore and to run the risk in this interesting scenario. It is a story of work, perseverance and sacrifice but also of success and great satisfactions.
It was the time of the pioneers of Lpg whose market tried with difficulty to get out of the shallows of the war had brought it into.

At that time gas was imported in Italy in cylinders and then sold to the operators of the sector.
After Butan Gas was entered the national market, indeed, the market itself started to develop, which was necessary to reach each single potential customer all over Italy, isles and everywhere (one of the main purposes of ButanGas at the beginning) supplying with the product at the same price conditions taking into consideration also the social function of this new source of energy, mainly for domestic use in order to soon replace wood and coal.
The first depot was set up in Sesto San Giovanni, near Milan and then was moved to Taliedo always near to the suburbs of Milan.

In the fifties the company implemented its development strategy on two fronts: on one hand through a widespread network even on the isles and on the other hand massive investments were performed for the storage of the product and for filling plants.
Starting from this purpose another company, Petrolchimica Partenopea, was set up in 1951 in Naples along with the building of a sea-terminal which is now one of the most important coastal depot of South-Europe with a storage capacity of 18.710 mc.
Afterwards other plants marked the beginning of a successful period: Porto Torres (1955), Catania (1956) , Bari ( 1960), Mantova (1961), Porcari ( 1962) and Pescara (1968).
Once consolidated its position on the national lpg market in cylinders, ButanGas promotes, among the first companies of the sector, new industrial activities such as the lpg consumption in “small tanks” for small industry and then for commercial, residential and agricultural uses in those areas not reached by the gas pipeline.
The result of this new kind of gas distribution was immediate and ButanGas consolidated also in this sector a position of leader which is still covered today supplying with more than 165.000 customers “petit-vrac” on the whole national territory.
ButanGas has grown up and we cannot put a stop to the policy of industrial development: other sites are set up such as Volpiano, Montalto Uffugo and Paese.

Its capillary presence on the National territory through a distribution network consisting of 15 Branches, 13 Operational Unities and of 8 big plants, the quality of service, the high professionality of its organisation are on the basis of ButanGas’ Company philosophy, focused on the client, on its exigences and on its needs.
ButanGas has, among its inalienable aims, security and environmental conservation, whose achievement it is guaranteed by investment policies focused on a continue modernization of its structures.

Today all the ButanGas plants are equipped with the highest standards on the matter of security, efficiency and technology.
